This Week

So I cleaned the grout between the tiles on the bathroom floor. On my hands and knees. And with a lot of elbow grease. It is a job that I have always hated but a job that sometimes needs to get done. All part of being an adult. I couldn’t ignore it anymore because the tiles in our upstairs bathroom are a light beige and the grout is supposed to be light, too. But it was almost black. Very VeRY VERY gross.

Here is a before and after shot. (The image quality is a little poor but whatcha gonna do? The tile colour is more like what you see on the right.)

Much better, no? Isn't the grout on the left pretty gross? Well that's all gone now.

And what’s my go to cleaning method? This:

Squeeze onto grout, wait 15 minutes, scrub, rinse. Repeat if necessary.

Yup, a toilet bowl cleaner. With bleach in it. And whatever small scrubbing tool I have on hand. Like a toothbrush. Works like a charm.

Moving on...

Yesterday I joined Snapchat, an image messaging and multimedia mobile application. I’m sure some of you know all about this app but I’m a total newbie at it. I couldn’t add the app to my smartphone because the operating system on my phone is too old, so I downloaded it to my tablet. I can honestly say that I haven't the foggiest how this thing works. Why do I torment myself with these things that I’m not that interested in to begin with? Because my kids hang around there and share a whole bunch of photos that I’m missing. “Mom, we share a lot of photos on Snapchat. You should join.” So I did. And I’m totally confused. Ah well, I’m sure I’ll figure it out in time. All those years I worked in computers should come in handy, right? We shall see.

Also yesterday, the most amazing man in the world started laying down new flooring in our basement/playroom/TV room area. Can you say ‘bursting with joy’? It won’t be long before we start moving some of our shit stuff in there. And opening up boxes. Yes, we still have things packed in boxes. I've forgotten what's in most of them.

I used my slow cooker twice this week. It’s been a long time since I plugged that in. In fact, I’ve been slacking off quite a bit on home cooking. It’s been pretty sporadic. I’ve been so consumed by this house and all its chores that I have lost sight of that. So this week we’ve been eating well and loving it. I even made a delicious lemon bread that we both enjoy. The recipe can be found here.

Here is something that makes my eyes roll behind my head.

Every now and again I read (for the umpteenth time) about “shark-infested” waters. Or some ocean or beach or lake or river that has been ‘infested’ or “invaded” by specific fish or whales or alligators or turtles, etc. I can’t tell you how ridiculous I find this. These animals live in the water. It is their habitat. If there’s any type of infestation, it’s from humans. That’s who doesn’t belong in the water. Can we be such an arrogant species to think that we rule everywhere? Yes, yes we can.

That’s my two cents on this. Hold on while I put away my podium...

And I think that’s all I have to say for now. How was your week? Share in the comments below. And make sure to have a wonderful weekend!

  1. Wow, there is a big difference in the floor before and after. Who would have thought toilet cleaner too, but it does make sense. I might have to try that, though I don't have a lot of flooring that accumulates grout (thank God). I have heard a bit about SnapChat but pretty clueless about it all. Maybe you'll have to get together with one of your daughters and get a quick tutorial on it. It does sound fun though.

    Have a great weekend!

    1. I'm thinking of doing just that, Betty. A bit of tutoring will make it much easier. In any case, I don't plan to use it much. I'm just going to check in once in awhile to see if my kids are sharing anything. I hope you had a lovely weekend!

  2. Makes one want to make tile go away forever, doesn't it? I did the same but used vinegar, baking soda and toothbrush. Worthy of 'As Seen On TV" ads!!!

    1. I like your way, Toni. Next time I'm going to use a homemade mix without all the nasty chemicals. I've replaced most of our cleaning products with natural products, so this'll be coming soon!

  4. Yep, I used clorox for cleaning and it works like a charm. I'll try to find you on Snapchat.

  5. Hi Martha, I may join you on that podium. I always say that animals were here first and we are the ones who "raped" their land so to speak. When I hear of a bear who is killed because it's wandered into a town, it makes my blood boil because guess what, it's not the bear's fault in the end. I like the message of that shark ad...If someone decides to venture into the ocean, they should know that they are not on the top of the food chain out there. Alright...I'm all heated up now so I'll step down lol...

Your floor looks great. Congratulations on cleaning grout during the summer!!! That's not a job I'd like to do ANY time, but especially not now!

    1. Come on up, Rain. There is enough room for both of us. And enough room for many more. I cannot stand to even hear about those bear stories anymore. Or any other animal that gets killed for nothing. It leaves me sick for days. I've said it before and I will continue to say it: I think humans are the most dangerous species on the planet. We are selfish and destructive!

Cleaning grout is a job I cannot stand! But this is grout dirt from previous home owners, so eww... When it's your own germs you can somehow live with it! LOL

  6. WOW, the cleaned grout looks amazing. That is a great tip to use toilet cleaner. I used the Clorox Clean Up and it seemed to work also but I suspect the thickness on the toilet cleaner would stay put longer and better.

You are so right about the use of the word "infested". Ridiculous when humans take the position that animals are somehow intruding into our space as opposed to it's humans that are intruding into animals space.

    1. That's what I loved best about it, Cheryl! How thick it is. Although I would like to mix a less toxic formula in the future. But for now I'm so pleased with the results. I might give it one more pass in a couple of weeks because of how filthy it was. There are a few spots that I think can turn out even better.

  7. I love the chameleons in the Skittles!

Thanks for the tips on cleaning the grout. You did an amazing job - well done.

And the shark ad and your commentary? Right on.

  8. That's a big difference, well done.
I always keep an old toothbrush handy for cleaning the parts that other brushes don't reach!

Another week gone, and it's weekend time ... we have a quiet one planned, might even watch the World Athletics on the TV, especially Usain Bolt in the 100metres.

    Enjoy your weekend

    All the best Jan

  9. Grout can be disgusting. When I worked produce, I realized the grout wasn't suppose to be black after dropping some drops of some food-grade bleach we used to clean cutting boards by accident.

  12. Amazing job on the grout. Hubby did the bathroom tiles a week or so ago, that's his job :). I recently joined Instagram at the recommendation of others, not too hard to figure out. Enjoy the weekend.

    1. I would bet money that they never did. Every square inch of this house has needed a thorough cleaning. I think they just did some basic cleaning while they lived here and that's about it. Some areas were filthy like the grout.

  16. Oh wow. You made a drastic improvement cleaning those tiles. It's impressive. At my office we have an old floor--ancient. Pretty much the only way to really clean it is to pour cleaner strait on it, let it sit till it has an effect, then mop it up.

    1. I'm so pleased with how clean the grout is but it's not a job I enjoy! Hopefully it'll be awhile before I have to do this again.

Nice to see you here, Bethany! I noticed you posted on your blog. I'll be visiting as soon as I can. It's been a very busy time for us.

  18. You did an amazing job cleaning! It looks like new. That is a good trick with the toilet cleaner. My trick to clean almost anything is a mix of dishwasher gel and water in a spray bottle. That is very true about sharks. Have a great week. I can't wait to see your new floor.

    1. That is a great mixture, too! I've done that. I prefer natural cleaners, especially because of the cats. I'm going to prepare a homemade, non-toxic mix for my next grout cleanup.

  19. Glad you are done with grout Martha!

you made me laugh while saying that you forgot what is packed in your boxes .Take this as a change which is always better if you stay positive i believe .
you are missing your stuff hidden in boxes and that is the magic of change .unpacking will give you a pjoy that will be another magic ..

my both son and hubby use lots of facebook and share stuff and oics but how lazy of me that though i have account but i din't use it (lack of time) and can' even click on "LIKES"

Last piece of brilliance was impressive .
    lots of LOVE!

    1. I can't wait to unpack all our things! It'll be fun because each box will be a bit of a surprise. It's also an opportunity to donate a lot of these items. Since I haven't really missed them, I don't really need them! I'll keep what we like and give the rest away.

I like to join social sites where my kids are. They share photos that I wouldn't otherwise see!

  20. I already belong to way too many social media apps, snapchat doesn't interest me, and it's funny, just today I was reading an article that said there are no new big SM platforms. A few smaller ones, but nothing major to join. Years ago I joined about two dozen SM, book sites, news sites, it just became way too much to keep up with so I've culled the last 4 or 5 years. I don't need anymore.

  21. Yikes!!!! I'll bet you are glad to get that grout cleaned. And thanks for the great grout cleaning tip ~ It would never have occurred to me to use toilet bowl cleaner! I was supposed to learn how to use Instagram in Nova Scotia. My niece Naddy was going to show me. I haven't even thought about Snapchat. I'm being left way behind ~ although the nieces and nephews throw me a bone on Facebook now and again. LOL

    1. All caught up, especially on what happened with your mother. How distressing that must be for her! Hopefully time will bring her back to feeling like her old self. I loved reading your favorite memory about when you were lost and made your way home and how happy your brother was to see you. and of course your C&Cs are always awesome. Tomorrow I plan to catch up with the Little People. Have a good one!

    2. Thanks for visiting, Louise! And I know all about trying to catch up. I usually save your posts for when I can sit down and enjoy them without feeling rushed. It's like reading a good book; you don't want to skim through it!

It's very sad what happened to my mother. The whole thing has been so hard on her. Monday was the first time I've seen signs of hope that she will get better. I just wish she would believe it. It'll take time.

    3. Oh, and those social media sites...I'm very behind on them! I joined Snapchat because of my kids but I don't see myself being active on it. I'll just check their profiles now and again to see if they share any photos.
